Introduction to Linocut Printmaking: Christmas cards

What is linocut printmaking? In linocut (similar to woodcut), a design is carved or cut into a piece of linoleum using hand held carving tools. The lino is then inked with a roller, the raised (uncarved) areas of the lino surface representing the area that will show when printed. A piece of paper is laid over the inked surface, and an impression is taken; this can be done by hand or with a printing press. The resulting image on the paper is a mirror (reversed) image of the original design.
Date/Time: October 21st 1:30-4:30
Please join me for an Introduction to Linocut Printmaking on October 21st from 2-4 pm, where you will carve and print your very own, one-of-a-kind, wonderfully hand-made Christmas cards!
In this class, you will learn to
  • Prepare your linoleum block
  • Transfer your drawing to the lino
  • Carve your design into the block
  • Apply ink to your block with a roller
  • Use a hand press to print your design onto cardstock
I will supply all the materials, but DO PLEASE bring your own design for your cards. Ideally, this should be hand-drawn and can be done in either pencil or pen. I recommend keeping the design fairly simple, as our carving time will be somewhat limited. Also, while creating your design, please keep in mind that these will be single color linocut prints. This means that your design, when printed, will be in only one color. I will have an assortment of ink colors for you to choose from (white, black, blue, red, or green, possibly more), and you can print different cards in different colors if you wish.
Note: We will be using 5 x 7" cardstock (white), so your design should fit easily within that frame. Please feel free to bring colored cardstock if you wish, but it should be 5 x 7" pre-cut and ready to go.
Also: We will be using oil-based printing ink. This means your cards may take a day or two to dry completely, but it also means you can go back in later and hand color (if you wish) with watercolor and the ink won't run! It also means you should probably wear something old that you don't mind getting ink on.
The goal is for everyone to have up to 5 hand-printed, original linocut Christmas cards to take home! You will also be taking home your original lino block, so that you can print more cards in the future.
The class will be tailored for those with little or no experience with linocut, but all levels of experience are welcome.
Ages 12 and up.
