What is linocut printmaking? In linocut (similar to woodcut), a design is carved or cut into a piece of linoleum using hand held carving tools. The lino is then inked with a roller, the raised (uncarved) areas of the lino surface representing the area that will show when printed. A piece of paper is laid over the inked surface, and an impression is taken; this can be done by hand or with a printing press. The resulting image on the paper is a mirror (reversed) image of the original design.
- Prepare your linoleum block
- Transfer your drawing to the lino
- Carve your design into the block
- Apply ink to your block with a roller
- Use a hand press to print your design onto cardstock
Instructor Carol Black-Addyman creates original fine art prints and hand-carved stamps in her home studio using traditional methods.
